what is the solids control system used for?
A solids control system is usually used to separate and remove solids generated from strata during drilling operations. The solids would be eliminated step by step to recycle and reuse the drilling fluid.A solids control system includes 4 stages solids control and 5stages purifications.About 4 stages solids control:
- the first stage is shale shaker which is mainly used to remove the particles with a diameter over 74microns;
- the second stage is desander which is mainly used to remove the particles with a diameter between 45-74 microns;
- the third stage is desilter which is used to remove the particles with a diameter between 15-44 microns;
- the forth stage is mud decanter centrifuge which is used to remove the particles with a diameter between 2-7 microns.

When it comes to 5 stages purifications, it usually refers to mud gas separator which is the first stage and vacuum degasser which is the second stage. Mud gas separator usually is positioned before shale shaker and is used for eliminating some small bubbles. Vacuum degasser is usually positioned after shale shaker but before mud cleaner and is used to remove small bubbles which contain harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane from the drilling mud.
how a solids control system works?
Equipments of the solids control system is all above the tanks. Among them, mud agitator usually requiring one every 3 meters, and there is one above both supply compartment and drug tank.

The drilling mud from strata firstly enters supply compartment of shale shaker while mud agitator operating to make sure the homogeneity of drilling mud. Then drilling mud would be transferred to a shale shaker to remove the particles with a diameter over 74 microns. The treated drilling mud falls into sand pit, passes through it and enters vacuum degasser. Vacuum degasser would remove small bubbles to eliminate harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane. After being treated, the drilling mud arrives at mud cleaner(or a combination of a single desande and a single desilter), which removes the particles with a diameter between 15-74microns. Dropping into tanks, mud would be stir again by another agitator. Besides mud cleaner, there is a drug tank which is used for add drugs or some barites. Also above the medicine tank, a small agitator is equipped to stir so that the drilling mud can be homogeneity. In the end, the cleaned drilling mud can be recycled and reused.
